That is the night we learned about 1Mission for the first time, a community development organization that strengthens families by building them safe and secure homes that they could not possibly afford on their own. As Entrepreneurs we know how much the human spirit is willing to sacrifice in order to make their dreams come true and believe in helping those people win who are willing to help themselves. They aren’t a charity though and don’t just give these homes to people in need but give them to families that earn the privilege through participation in an extensive process of learning self sustaining skills along with serving their community for 200 hours at minimum. This concept of giving people in need a hand up instead of a handout and empowering them to help support themselves, really resonated deeply with us as a company culture as we believe is partnering with businesses to get them more opportunities to delight their customers and ultimately create a brand that has a consistent and growing customer base.
We were excited to hear that 1mission does the majority of their work in Puerto Penasco Mexico which is less than a 4 hour drive from the phoenix area and a beach community that many people travel to escape the heat or just find some beach close. This would give us an opportunity to support an organization that truly impacts the people that live in the local community that we do most of our business in. Another part of the 1Mission story that was attractive to us is how they are 100 percent privately funded to cover the operations of their organization and how all the finances that are contributed to them through our partnership would go directly to the $8,000 cost of building a new home for a family. This was important to us because we didn’t just want to donate money to pay salaries for people to warm a chair and be inefficient. We believe in running a cutting edge yet efficient company so that we can get our clients results at as competitive a cost as possible.
After hearing about the great community development process that they utilize, that the families we are helping actually live/work in a town where many of our clients and their customers vacation, and that all of our financial contribution would go directly to the homes of families in need and not to a big salary or unknown budget we decided to discuss how this could be a great fit for what we were looking to invest in. After checking out their website and asking a couple of people who had participated with 1Mission we decided to make a commitment as an organization to donate a percentage of our revenue this year 2020 to 1Mission on a monthly basis to fund the home builds of deserving families in need. We were also very excited for the opportunity to touch and feel where our financial contribution would be making an impact and go on a build trip in the Beginning of March.
This leads us across the border on March 6th to go build a home for a family who has earned themselves a new home through the 1Mission community development program. It had been a while since I left what I consider to be a life lived in paradise to travel to Mexico and even then most of those trips were just to beach resort towns with mostly other Americans. As soon as we drove across the border I was immediately reminded of how good life really is for all of us as Americans. The infrastructure and ease of travel is something that most of us take for granted. We pulled into the 1Mission base camp about an hour later and were delighted to find a well built and maintained property as we would later find out can host up to 400 people at a time.
We had an introductory meeting to get to know the staff and what we would be doing for the next 2 days. The character to be known as Pedro was running the show and doing a very engaging job of explaining to everybody the lay of the land. We got to meet Greg and his wife who are in charge of running the base camp and hosting all the people that come down to assist in the physical building of the homes. When working with people who are committed to what they are doing and in the process of getting better at as time passes it really invites un in to take ownership and want to do our best to help them succeed long term as well and these are the kinds of businesses we want to partner with at their Marketing experts.
Early Saturday morning after a very satisfying authentic Mexican breakfast we were off heading into town to go start our work for the day. Our map had taken us on some soft sand roads that lined open and mostly occupied lots a couple miles inland from the resort side of town. As we pulled up to our job site that morning we were pleased to find that the recipient of the home Judi and her 2 year old daughter Emily would be on site watching in anticipation and encouraging us in the construction of their new home. We learned it is the responsibility of the family to secure the land and they had been living on it for some time in a small 6’ x 9’ shack. Judi is just 19 years old and pregnant with her 2nd baby girl they are going to name Nicole. She is due to have the baby 2 days after we leave. Her husband Jorge is off to work all day long to try to support the family. Once we truly felt the impact that this home would have on a young couple who neither of them had ever lived on a home with a concrete floor we were all convicted to do our best job building them a good home. Our group of builders was filled with 5 people from a Mortgage company that were seeing first hand what it really means to get people into a home and gave them purpose and vision again for what they do on a daily basis. We also had 4 other guys from a church group that were retired and just wanted to give back to an organization that truly makes an impact. Just like in our business when we are doing work for those people who are doing all they can to help themselves and we truly know we can make an impact a long strenuous day doesn’t even feel like work at all. All day as we worked on the roof we could look around and see the structures of people who are many times living on less than $400 per month we were reminded of how fortunate we are as Americans to live without thought of food or shelter and appreciate the seemingly limitless access to knowledge and information on how to create any kind of lifestyle we desire. As we labored it was honorable to know that we were part of creating a safe secure structure for this young couple to live in and were giving them a literal foundation to build a better life for their family upon.
As we returned back to BaseCamp that night we were again fed incredibly well with local food and were presented with the community development program that all home recipients are required to go through to be awarded a new home. They are taught financial management principles and new skills to be able to produce and sustain themselves and their family. They also must contribute hundreds of hours of service to their community in order to qualify to get a new home. Each home that is awarded is currently a 20’ x 20’ structured fully constructed with 2 bedrooms and one bathroom fully enclosed and plumbing and electrical built in throughout the house. The families are also responsible for affording their own kitchen, toilet, shower to fully finish the house. We are literally giving them the framework to turn a house into their very own home.
Sunday morning started bright and early again as the neighborhood rooster crowed at about 5AM according to some campers. We arrived on the job site that morning to learn that Judi was scheduled to have her 2nd baby just 2 days later and that there would not be a crew to come in until the next weekend to finish whatever we did not get done. We all rallied together to get this home done as much as possible so this family could bring their new baby into the world with a new home ready to live in. We banded together in our labor of love to finish all the plaster on the roof making it sealed and leak proof and were able to finish the plaster on all the inside walls and frame up, insulate and sheetrock all the interior walls and ceiling leaving everything ready for the local crew to come install the doors and windows the next day and have the house sealed for them to receive their baby.
We were fortunate enough on Sunday afternoon to be able to drive across town to see the centers where all the program participants are taught self sustaining gardening techniques and the sewing center where the women are taught a trade not only to cloth their families but also can get commissioned to make garments for others in the community which they have done many times. We could definitely feel the culture of the collective community supporting each other but in a way that develops people’s gifts and empowers them to take care of themselves and their families. Those who were once students grow and now become teachers to others around them and the cycle of community growth is perpetuated.
Sunday night was the final wrap and a night of celebration at BaseCamp with delicious Carne Asada Tacos, Tomales, and Horchata for all. We got a chance to spend more time with the receiving families and truly feel their gratitude and the hope they have for their future knowing there are people out there who care and are willing to give of their time and money to help them along the way. It was a great opportunity to feel deep gratitude to have the abundance that we have as Americans and to feel great purpose and honor to be able to share that with others who are not as fortunate in a way that truly makes an impact. 5 stars to 1Mission and their incredible organization run with integrity by great leaders who have committed their lives to this program.
